I started the building process by weaving flat reed through the cage bars, until I had a kind of basket, using wire and pliers to keep it tightly together. I then used yarn to make the opening in the front (door) smaller, so that it was the proper size for the bird of my choice (chickadee). Then I used the pie plate for a liner on the inside of the basket/cage to keep lights from streaming in through the reed, cutting a hole for where the door was. Finally I attached the pot to the inside of the cage, forming the back, using yarn to secure it in place. For the perch I ended up using an army men beause I thought that it would be more interesting then a spoon. In the end I think that using the yarn to make the door smaller was a successful idea because after getting the house spray painted, the yarn kind of mended together, enforcing that it will stay together out doors and won't unwind . I found that using the pie plate was the most unsuccessful because it was placed inside the bird house kind of awkwardly, and if I could have done anything differently, I would have used a different material for the inside. |
