For my final typography assignment, I was told to find a quote(famous, song lyrics, etc.) and create a T-shirt design using the elements and principles of typography. First I searched the internet for cool, interesting quotes that caught my eye. After choosing one, I opened Illustrator, created an 8.5x11 inch art board. I then placed every word from my quote on a separate layer, and named it that word so I would be able to identify which was which. I didn't know exactly how I was going to lay my quote out on the T-shirt, so I looked up different graphic T-shirt designs for inspiration; it was now time to get down to work.
Using rulers, I used multiple lines to create outlines for where I wanted my font to extend to, and how large I wanted it to be. I then created a line out of box-like letters, saying "FAIL" over and over again with out spaces, and I used this to signify the beginning and end of the the quote. I experimented with many different fonts, and ended up designing my T-shirt in a way that I used sans serif fonts in the middle lines, and serif fonts for lines beginning and ending the quote. I created outlines to make words bigger, forcing them to take up the amount of space I needed them to take up. I found it difficult to make my T-shirtdesign take up lots of space. It seemed really bare at first until I changed the kerning on some words, and font on others to suit my needs. I wasn't the happiest with my end product, and feel I could have done a bit better to make it more creative. |
